For over twenty years, the Stella Adler Arts Justice Division has been on a mission to democratize theater for all New Yorkers. Today, our programs reach over 1,000 participants per year, including those who are justice involved.
In September of 2014, we began providing arts education services to Rikers Island Correctional Facility, and we have since become their leading provider. As our students were released from jail, we wanted to be able to support them during their re-entry transition. Returning citizens who have been justice-involved can take part in Outside/In, creating and performing original works inspired by their experiences. This work is offered out of an urgent need to build the world we want to live in tomorrow today.
