Black Arts Winter Immersion

Dates: January 21 – 25, 2019
Duration: 1 Week, 30 Hours of Class
Tuition: $650

Led by a world-class faculty including Stephen McKinley Henderson, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Phylicia Rashad, Michele Shay and Sonia Sanchez, the Black Arts Winter Immersion is a week-long comprehensive review of the history of the contemporary Black theater tradition, highlighting certain key historical moments like the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Power movement and the genesis of the Negro Ensemble Company. The purpose is to walk away with an understanding of the aesthetic and sociological components involved in bringing contemporary black theater to life.

Course Descriptions:

  • Voice and Movement Warm-Up: 30 min vocal/physical warm-up class at the beginning of the day.
  • Script Analysis: An immersive page-by-page analysis of the plays we’ll focus on in the intensive. Teacher(s) may bring in historic documents, literature, videos, etc. to fully explore the culture of the time.
  • Scene Study: Working on assigned scenes from the above-mentioned plays in preparation for a possible showcase at the end of the intensive.
  • The Black Arts Movement: A lecture series open to the public. Topics will include the common themes within the Black Arts Movement. We would market these lectures to producers, directors, designers, and educators.
  • Music: An in-depth exploration of the key role of music in the Black Arts movement. The blues. Perhaps we’d bring in instruments such as African drums. Perhaps students would sing.
  • Movement and Dance: Learning the correlation between movement/gesture and historical period. Learning various dances such as Juba.
