EVENING INTRODUCTORY PROGRAM

FUNDAMENTALS OF ACTING

“Growth as an actor and growth as a human being are synonymous”. This ideal sits at the core of Fundamentals of Acting. New to acting? Curious about the artform? Why does the art of acting speak to you? What is the job description of an actor? What does it mean to breathe life into words that are not your own? And what is it to recreate the human experience and how does your humanity filter through a character? This is the process we will investigate in this 4 week course for beginner actors. Let’s grow.

Acting Technique


RON BURRUS MASTER CLASS

Explore the language and principles of acting technique developed by Stella Adler®, including action, imagination, circumstance, and justification in an intensive-style format with Master Teacher Ron Burrus. This 6-week intensive is ideal for the committed actor who is looking to learn and enrich their craft. Students will explore acting technique in the shortest amount of time with the highest results. Ron Burrus is considered the greatest living exponent of Stella Adler’s work, having taught beside her for over a decade.

ACTING TECHNIQUE 2: Deepening the Character

Creating a meaningful, personal and profound background for a character is a necessity for truthfulness Onstage or On Camera. In this class the actor will learn to create a psychological background for their character in order to experience the text of a scene or play in a personal and profound way, while serving the author’s intention. Play analysis, monologue work and specific character exercises will be used to explore the deeper meaning of the text and the actor’s role in relation to the author’s larger theme.

This introductory level class focuses on process by exploring technique, monologues, and scene work to deepen the craft. This class is ideal for the actor seeking a strong foundation and to challenge themselves with material from theater and film (and sometimes TV).

This class moves beyond the fundamentals of Scene Study 1. It is devoted entirely to contemporary scene work and provides a greater variety of characters and situations that take the actor’s skill to a higher level.

This advanced workshop is a hybrid of on-camera scene study and audition technique for the trained actor with renowned casting director/acting teacher Todd Thaler. Through scene work and audition practices students will fine tune their on-camera technique while still sharpening and expanding their artistic and creative skill set.


ACTING FOR FILM & TELEVISION

This intermediate level class is an “immersion” experience in the techniques necessary to work in feature film as well as in television dramas and comedies. Working off of audition sides, students will learn to memorize scripts quickly, relax in front of a camera and “find themselves” in the roles they are playing; three skills necessary for success in feature film and television performance. This is not a class for beginners, previous actor training required.


SELF TAPE AUDITION TECHNIQUE

During this time, opportunities for auditions and showcases are being presented online, and it is important for actors to present themselves in a memorable and engaging way through their self tapes. This class will teach actors the elements of a good self-tape and will help build their confidence on how they present themselves to the virtual industry. After learning the fundamentals, students will be receiving feedback from a Casting Director, Show Runner, or Writer.


Voice & Speech


SOUND INTO ACTION: VOICE & MONOLOGUE

This class is a unique hybrid of voice and speech, language and text, and acting technique. One hour of voice exercises, followed by two hours of monologue work. Each actor will leave the class with fully realized, contrasting classical & contemporary speeches to add to their monologue portfolio.


VOICE OVER 101

Taught by VO Instructor Bruce Kronenberg, Voice Over 101 is the most comprehensive voice over training you can get in New York City.  Covering every genre of VO (Radio Commercials, Television Commercials, Audiobook and Narration and Animation), learn how to use your new skills to make money.  The final class covers the Business of the Voice Over Business. Students receive MP3 files of their weekly work.


Shakespeare


SHAKESPEARE MONOLOGUE WORKSHOP

Shakespeare festivals and theatre companies always look for actors with classical chops. In this four week course, students will learn the fundamentals of verse and how to apply them to their monologue. Students will learn how to shape a monologue so that it has texture and character and clarity. Students will also learn what auditors are looking for, and how to make the audition experience one that they can control. In each class, students will share their monologues, get feedback on memorized pieces, and learn from watching others. Don’t ever get caught unprepared to show yourself at your best!


I, TOO, SPEAK IN COLOR

In this workshop, BIPOC students will explore the work of William Shakespeare and employ practical, active, grounded application of acting and language technique to bring it to bold life. We will discuss the history of Shakespearean actors of color and keep the path clear for a future of Shakespearean actors of color. In a learning environment designed to be comprised of people and minds of color, we will seek to strip away the Euro-centric Shakespearean lens, through which BIPOC actors have often felt intimidated and alienated. By fostering a space for comfort and ownership for the actor of color In Shakespeare, we will help to paint colorful life onto the words of Shakespeare!


Monologue


MONOLOGUE TECHNIQUE with H. RICHARD GREENE

This course invites the actor to explore the monologue process from preparation through performance, with particular focus on the vitality of moment-to-moment experience and the full pursuit of actions. The goal is to create provocative characters that animate the text and uniquely showcase the actor. Actors are required to come with several choices of contrasting character monologues which they feel highlight their range and versatility. The monologues are to be chosen from both classic and contemporary plays with themes of love, betrayal, or obsession. Decisions as to which characters the actor will explore will be made by the instructor and based on originality and suitability. The intrinsic value in this communal exploration is that creative discoveries made by one actor are applicable to all. Instructor: H. Richard Greene
